Sound & Science
The research and principles behind our frequency sessions.
The Sound Pharmacy sessions are rooted in decades of research into the relationship between sound, frequency, and human experience. This page outlines the foundational thinking behind our approach.
The Science of Sound and the Human System
Sound is not merely something we hear – it is something we experience with our entire body. Every cell in the human system is sensitive to vibration. The research field known as vibroacoustics has documented how specific sound frequencies interact with biological tissue, the nervous system, and cellular processes in ways that go beyond ordinary auditory experience.
Pioneering researchers including Dr. Peter Guy Manners, Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, and the work emerging from institutions studying bioresonance have consistently pointed to a simple truth: the body has a natural frequency, and disruption of that frequency — through stress, environmental exposure, or accumulated tension – creates the experience of imbalance. Targeted sound can help restore resonance.
Frequency, the Nervous System, and the Relaxation Response
The most well-documented mechanism through which sound sessions produce their effects is the nervous system. Specific frequency patterns – particularly those in the theta (4–8 Hz) and alpha (8–13 Hz) brainwave ranges – reliably shift the nervous system from sympathetic activation (the stress response) into parasympathetic dominance (the rest-and-digest state).
In this state, the body’s natural self-regulatory processes become significantly more active. Circulation improves, lymphatic flow increases, inflammatory markers decrease, and the cellular environment becomes more conducive to the body’s own maintenance and renewal processes. This is not metaphor – it is the documented physiology of deep relaxation.
Binaural Beats and Entrainment
Many Sound Pharmacy sessions use binaural beat technology – a phenomenon discovered by Prussian physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839 and rigorously studied in the modern era. When two slightly different frequencies are played simultaneously (one in each ear), the brain perceives a third frequency equal to the difference between them and naturally begins to synchronize to that frequency – a process called neural entrainment or brainwave entrainment.
This entrainment effect is measurable via EEG and has been reproduced in multiple peer-reviewed studies. The practical implication: specific mental and physiological states can be reliably invited through sound, without pharmacological agents or external intervention.
The Rife Frequency Tradition
Royal Raymond Rife was an American scientist working in the early 20th century who developed the hypothesis that every biological entity – including microorganisms and cells – has a characteristic resonant frequency, and that applying that frequency can produce measurable biological effects. While Rife’s original work remains controversial in mainstream medicine, the underlying principle of biological resonance has gained renewed attention in contemporary biophysics research.
The Sound Pharmacy sessions draw on this tradition not as a medical claim, but as a philosophical framework: we believe that sound, applied with intention and precision, can create conditions within the body that invite its own natural processes of balance and renewal.
Our Approach: Invitation, Not Intervention
It is important to state clearly what The Sound Pharmacy is and is not. Our sessions are not medical treatments. They do not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. They are wellness audio experiences – carefully designed sonic environments intended to support the body’s own natural processes and invite specific experiential states.
The language we use deliberately reflects this: our sessions are “designed to invite” experiences, not to produce medical outcomes. This is an honest description of what sound can do – and what it cannot. Sound can create the conditions for the body to do what it already knows how to do. The rest is the body’s own remarkable capacity for self-regulation.
A Note on Sources
The field of sound wellness sits at the intersection of established neuroscience, emerging biophysics research, and centuries of cross-cultural healing traditions. We draw on all three. Where we cite external research, we link to the specific study or source material – not to general databases. Where we draw on tradition, we say so. Where something represents our own interpretive framework, we are transparent about that as well.
We believe the most honest thing we can do for our customers is to be precise about what sound can and cannot do — and to let the experience speak for itself.
